eBay charges a 13.25% final value fee plus $0.40 per order in most categories, calculated on the total order amount including shipping. Some categories are cheaper — 8% on US sneakers over $150, 6.7% on select guitars and basses, 3% on heavy equipment — and media categories are higher at 14.95%. Promoted Listings, international sales and Below Standard seller status add further percentages on top.

Promoted Listings rates

  • Promoted Listings Standard: You set the ad rate — commonly 2%–12% — and pay only when the listing sells through the ad. Charged on top of the final value fee.
  • Promoted Listings Advanced: Cost-per-click bidding on keywords. You pay per click whether or not the item sells.
  • Promoted Offsite: Percentage-of-sale fee when the sale comes from an offsite ad placement.
  • Promoted Listings Express: Flat percentage on auction-style listings for extra placement.

Surcharges and extra fees

  • Per-order fee: $0.40 on orders up to $10, $0.40 flat in most categories — charged once per order, not per item.
  • International fee: 1.65% extra when the buyer's registered address is outside the US.
  • Below-standard seller surcharge: An extra 6% final value fee while your seller level is Below Standard.
  • Very high 'item not as described' rate: An additional 5–6% for sellers well above the category average.
  • Insertion fee: $0.35 per listing after your monthly free-listing allowance is used.
  • Optional listing upgrades: Bold title, subtitle, reserve price and scheduled listings are each billed separately.
  • Currency conversion: Roughly 3% when your payout currency differs from the sale currency.

How to check eBay sold listings before you price

Fee rates are only half the calculation. The other half is the sold price, and on eBay that number is public: eBay sold listings show what buyers actually paid, not what sellers are asking.

To find them manually on eBay:

  1. Search the item as specifically as you can — include brand, model number, size and edition.
  2. Open Filters (or scroll to the left sidebar on desktop).
  3. Turn on Sold items, and Completed items if you also want unsold listings for context.
  4. Sort by Ended recently so you are reading current demand rather than last year's market.
  5. Ignore outliers at both ends and take the middle cluster — that is your realistic range.

Two cautions. First, sold listings only go back about 90 days in the standard search, so thin-volume items may show very few comps. Second, the sold price is the gross — the seller kept roughly 13.25% plus $0.40 less than the figure shown. Run the numbers above against any comp before you treat it as your take-home.

Scanning is the faster version of the same workflow: photograph the item or scan its barcode and FlipAI pulls the completed-sale range for that exact variant, then shows the fee-adjusted net in one step.

Know the sold price before you list

Fees only matter once you know what the item actually sells for. FlipAI lets you take a photo of any item or scan its barcode and see a value range from real completed sales — so you can check what it's worth before you buy or list.

Selling collectibles locally is the one way to skip these fees entirely — a card shop or coin dealer pays cash but buys below market, so compare their offer against your after-fee eBay net: sell sports cards near me, Pokémon cards, comic books, coins, vinyl records, Funko Pops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does eBay charge to sell an item?

In most categories eBay charges a 13.25% final value fee on the total order amount (item price plus shipping) plus a $0.40 per-order fee. Some categories are lower — 8% on US sneakers over $150, 6.7% on select guitars — and media categories are 14.95%.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total order amount, which includes what the buyer pays for shipping and any handling. Offering free shipping does not avoid the fee, it just moves the cost into the item price.

What is the eBay per-order fee?

$0.40 charged once per order in most categories, regardless of how many items are in that order. Combining multiple items into one order means one per-order fee instead of several.

Do eBay Store subscribers pay lower fees?

Store subscribers get a monthly free-listing allowance and slightly reduced final value fees in some categories. Below roughly 50 sales a month a Starter store rarely pays for itself.

How much are eBay Promoted Listings fees?

Promoted Listings Standard uses an ad rate you set — commonly 2%–12% of the sale — charged on top of the final value fee only when the item sells through the ad. Advanced is cost-per-click instead.

Are there extra eBay seller surcharges?

Yes. A 1.65% international fee applies on sales to buyers outside the US, insertion fees of $0.35 apply past your free-listing allowance, and Below Standard sellers pay an additional 6% final value fee.

Is this eBay fee calculator free?

Yes. This page is a free fee-schedule reference, and the linked profit calculator runs in your browser with no account and nothing stored.

How do I see eBay sold listings?

Search the item on eBay, open Filters, and turn on Sold items — optionally Completed items too. Sort by Ended recently, then take the middle cluster of prices and ignore the outliers. Sold listings show what buyers actually paid, unlike active listings, which only show what sellers are asking.

How far back do eBay sold listings go?

Roughly 90 days in the standard search filter. For low-volume items that can leave you with only a handful of comps, which is why a wider sold-price dataset gives a more stable range on rare items.

Is the eBay sold price what the seller actually received?

No. The sold price is the gross order amount. In most categories the seller kept about 13.25% plus $0.40 less than the number shown, before shipping and packaging costs.

What does an eBay calculator actually calculate?

It depends which one you use. A fee calculator like this page tells you the rates that apply to your category, Store tier and ad rate. A profit calculator applies those rates to a specific sale to give net profit, margin and ROI — that is the eBay profit calculator linked below.
